In order to equalise linear time-invariant or slowly time-variant data transmission channels, via which data are transmitted with no carrier according to the single sideband, residual sideband or double sideband method and the data are transmitted preferably by means of a digital modulation method in the form of data blocks in each case with a preceding test signal sequence, a section from a periodic PN (pseudo-noise) sequence is used as a test signal sequence, the output signal of the demodulator is correlated with a specific PN sequence, the channel impulse response is determined with the result of the correlation and the adjustment of a channel correlation filter and an equaliser is constantly optimised with the continuously corrected channel impulse response. <IMAGE>
