Fluorine-containing biphenyl compound and process for its preparation

4-Cyano-2-fluorobiphenyl of the formula (I) <IMAGE> is prepared by reacting the analogous bromine compound with copper(I) cyanide or by reacting 4-amino-3-fluorobenzonitrile with benzene in the presence of a nitrite. The crude product is purified by reduction. The fluorine-containing biphenyl compound is used as starting material for the synthesis of the pharmaceutical flurbiprofen.
