Catalysts for accelerating heterogeneous chemical reactions such as hydrogenations, cracking, dehydrogenations and Fischer-Tropsch reactions are prepared by electrolytic deposition of a catalytically active metal such as nickel on an aluminium substrate in such a way, that the metal particles are deposited in microparticulate form to enhance their catalytic activity. The aluminium substrate is prepared by cleaning and anodising it in order to deposit thereon an aluminium surface film having microporosity. The substrate is then dipped into an electrolytic bath of a salt solution of the metal which is to be deposited, and is subjected to AC electrolysis in order to bring about the desired deposition. Prior to use, the catalysts thus prepared should be heated in order to remove absorbed gases from their porous surfaces.
