A power-assisted brake system for road vehicles with hydraulic wheel brakes is explained, in which a separate brake circuit is provided for each vehicle wheel. For each brake circuit a separate pressure accumulator is provided, from which pressure is applied to the wheel brake. This pressure accumulator and an electrically actuatable solenoid valve arrangement, by means of which the wheel brake cylinder can be coupled to the pressure accumulator in pressure build-up phases, connected to the reservoir of the brake system in pressure reduction phases and can be shut off from both the pressure accumulator and the reservoir in pressure maintaining phases, are combined with the brake calliper of a wheel brake, assumed to be a disc brake, to form a compact unit. For proper actuation of the solenoid valve arrangement, an electronic control unit is provided, which from a comparison of reference value signals with actual value signals characteristic of the kinetic state of the vehicle wheel generates the control signals suitable for rapid matching of actual and reference value for the braking deceleration. The pressure accumulator can be charged by means of a separate accumulator charging pump provided for each brake circuit. The accumulator charging pumps are designed as small plunger pumps, which can be driven by the vehicle wheels.
