<p>The present invention provides an apparatus and process for treating sewage with activated sludge. The apparatus has a comminutor (1) for reducing the particle diameter of the sewage (if necessary) to not more than 20 mm, an aeration column (2) at least 10 m high to which the sewage is fed via pump (13). Sewage and activated sludge are drawn from the top of the column (2) by way of a pipe (14), aerated in an aerator (4) and returned to the bottom of the column. Also, sewage and activated sludge are withdrawn from the bottom of the column (2) along pipe (6) and transferred to a separator (7) that operates at a pressure that is not less than that prevailing at the bottom of the column (2). Separated sludge is returned to the column (2) by a pump (15) and purified sewage is removed from the separator (7) by way of a pressure-reducing unit (9). <IMAGE></p> |
