<p>EP--92535 A A fever thermometer (1) is protected by covering it with plastic film (2) of thickness 0.005 to 0.1 mm, expansibility of 700 percent without significant elasticity, a yield point below 15 MPa, and a breaking strength of at least 32 MPa. The protection is provided in the form of a layer of the film (2) fixed to a backing material (4) of kraft paper of wt. 20 to 50 gram per sq. m., the paper having tear indications or perforations (5,6) to facilitate penetration of the point of the thermometer. The backing can also be plastic and annular or U-shaped. The backing can be adhesively bonded to the protective film. A paper web is passed over the surface of a roller rotating in a glue trough and juxtaposed with a web of the film. Alternatively, the paper web can have a pre-coated heat sensitive adhesive and be heat-laminated to the film by passage of the two between a pair of heated nip rollers. - The thermometer is given a protective covering to reduce the risk of cross-infection, the covering being removed and replaced after each use. The plastic covering provides a smooth surface so that the patient suffers no irritation. The outer surface of the plastic is protected from dirt before use and is automatically turned inside out when the thermometer is retracted from it after use. (5pp) USAB- US4652145 A A fever thermometer is protected by a thin film using a laminate of (a) a paper having a low elasticity and expansibility, with an area wt. 20-50 g/m2 and provided with tear indicators, holes or perforations for penetration, bonded detachably to (b) a plastic film having an expansibility at least 700%, a thickness 0.005-0.1 mm and made from virtually non-elastic, linear, low density polythene having a breaking strength at least 32 MPa and a yield point below 15 MPa. The thermometer point is pushed into the film side of the laminate at a weakened point in the backing so that the film clings to the thermometer as it is pushed through and the backing is removed at the same time. After use the film is peeled offtowards the thermometer point and is turned inside out at the same time. - The plastic film is pref. glued or welded to the backing. The backing is suitably made from unbleached kraft paper, opt. a metal foil orplastic film.</p> |
