The hydraulic damping cylinder for an artificial limb joint in particular has a storage chamber for the fluid, and a receiving chamber into which the latter is forced via a damping port by a piston working in the cylinder. A return member forces the fluid back from the receiving chamber into the storage chamber. The storage chamber is an annular one between piston and cylinder. The piston has a shoulder sealing the storage chamber, and which is equipped with a bypass port, through which the fluid flows into the likewise annular receiving chamber.
