<p>PURPOSE:To measure the pitch and the twist direction of a helical arrangement generated in liquid crystal molecules in accordance with a pattern, by charging a cholestric liquid crystal into a wedge-type liquid crystal cell consisting of a pair of substrates subjected to a certain orientating treatment and irradiating the liquid crystal cell with light to attain the pattern. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal cell 1 is constituted so that glass substrates 2 and 3, between respective edges of which a spacer 4 is inserted, face each other obliquely to form a wedge shape. An inside face 2a of the glass substrate 2 is subjected to the orientating treatment in the horizontal direction, and an inside face 3a of the glass substrate 3 is subjected to the orientating treatment in the vertical direction. The cholestric liquid crystal is charged into the liquid crystal cell 1, and the liquid crystal cell 1 is irradiated with light, and the liquid crystal cell 1 is observed from above the glass substrate 3 to discriminate a certain pattern. The twist direction of the helical arrangement of the charged cholestric liquid crystal and the thickness of the liquid crystal cell 1 on boundaries of stripped patterns are measured accurately in accordance with this pattern, thereby measuring the pitch of a helix 6 formed with liquid crystal molecules 5.</p> |
