PURPOSE:To improve the mechanical life of a cation-exchange membrane, while inhibiting the vibration of said membrane, by performing the titled electrolysis while discharging cathodic gas formed in a cathodic chamber inside an electrolytic cell together with a catholyte outside the cell and pressing the cathion- exchange membrane onto an anode side. CONSTITUTION:In electrolyzing an aqueous alkali metal halide solution using a horizontal electrolytic cell using a cation-exchange membrane, hydrogen gas formed in a cathodic chamber provided at a position below the cation-exchange membrane is engulfed in the stream of a catholyte and discharged outside the cell. The initial linear velocity of an electrolyte to be supplied to the cathodic chamber is controlled above about 3cm/sec in the cathodic chamber. At the same time, pressure is applied onto the entire surface of the cation-exchange membrane at the cathode side, to perform the electrolysis while pressing the cathion-exchange membrane onto an anode side. By this method, caustic alkali of good quality, etc. can be stably obtained without raising the damage of the membrane. |
