A carrier, hinged to the leading end of a rod supports the shovel for slewing about a pivotal axis in the working direction by a hydraulic piston-and-cylinder unit. The latter is located parallel to the shovel cutting edge, in a support at the shovel top edge and engages a lever connected to the carrier. The lever consists of a coupling rod (11), with one end hinged to the carrier (3) at an interval from the shovel pivotal axis (2). The other end is hinged to a sliding piece (9), moved in the support (4) by the piston-and-cylinder unit (7), so as to slew the shovel to left and right, from its horizontal setting, through roughly equal angles.
