A suction valve with a lifting section for a reciprocating piston compressor is so designed that the lifting section (9) forms an abutment for the valve spring (8) and has an annular recess (10), in which the valve plate (7) and the valve spring (8) are arranged. This arrangement of the valve plate (7) in the recess (10) allows the lifting section (9) to have a significantly larger displacement travel than determined by the admissible working stroke of the valve plate. Accordingly with the lifting section (9) in the run-out position the flow cross section is significantly greater than the working stroke of the valve plate. With a valve plate (7) lying on the valve seat (6), that is at full delivery of the cylinder, the dead space in the area of the suction valve is determined solely by the height of the annular recess (10) of the lifting section (9). <IMAGE>
