The packaging machine for packaging cigarettes has a circulating packaging conveyor (22) which has hollow mandrels (21a, 21b, 21c), arranged one behind the other in the conveying direction, for reception of groups of cigarettes. Delivery means for delivering lengths of packaging material (92), holding means (46a, 46b) for feeding and holding the delivered lengths of packaging material on the hollow mandrels provided in each case, wrapping means (47, 48) for wrapping the lengths of packaging material around the hollow mandrels, and folding means for carrying out the wrapping processes are assigned to the packaging conveyor. The holding means are provided with pressure elements (69a, 69b) which are mounted between successive hollow mandrels on the packaging conveyor (22) and are pivotable by means of pivoting levers (68a, 68b) towards the front of the hollow mandrel (21a) following upstream when a length of packaging material (92) has been fed and towards the back of the preceding downstream hollow mandrel (21c) when the folding means (88, 88') has completed the backwards side wrapping. <IMAGE>
