In the case of a coolant circuit for internal combustion engines, especially vehicle engines, with an additional heat exchanger device, which is inserted between engine and main radiator, a thermostat is provided for keeping the engine operating temperature constant. This is split up into individual elements, that is into a temperature measuring element, which is arranged directly on the coolant outlet of the engine, and an actuator which is arranged directly in front of the inlet into the main radiator. The dissipated heat from auxiliary devices which are connected to the coolant circuit via the additional heat exchanger therefore serves, when the engine is cold, directly for heating the engine.
