The clamping device serves for securing the mountain climber and has a basic body with a guide in which a clamping piece is displaceable. It is fastened positively on the basic body transversely to the guide. Accommodated inside the basic body is a spring assembly which is supported by its one end on the underside and by its other end on the basic body. As a result of the positive guiding, the clamping piece cannot be detached from the basic body transversely, with the result that the clamping device can be handled easily. Directly after insertion of the clamping device in a rock crevice or the like, automatic clamping takes place due to the spring-loaded clamping piece.
