In order to lengthen by splicing a wire rope having a ply of strands (2) possessing a multiplicity of wire plies (5; 6; 7; 8), the strands (2) have under their outer wire ply (8) a core strand (3) with a smoothed surface. They can then be spliced by abutting the wires of the outer wire ply (7) of the core strand (3) and the wires of the outer wire ply (8) of the strands (2). The strands (2), possessing under their outer wire ply (8) a core strand (3) with a surface smoothed, for example, by drawing or rolling, are equivalent in the rope to the parallel-lay strands which are customary for large strand diameters, but which could be spliced only with one wire ply, namely the outer, with a correspondingly high loss of strength. <IMAGE>
