PURPOSE:To perform continuously and adequately a grinding operation while preventing the chipping of a grindstone in the stage of grinding a rolling roll by bringing the grindstone into press contact with the roll only when the grindstone moves in the direction where the grindstones emerges from a grindstone holder. CONSTITUTION:A grindstone 1 is brought into press contact with the surface of a rotating roll 2 under a prescribed force F, and while the grindstone 1 is moved back and forth in the direction parallel with the roll shaft and in a vertical direction, whereby the roll is ground. Since there is a slight space between a grindstone holder 3 and the grindstone 1, an inclined space DELTAS is formed, and contact points 5, 6 where the grindstone 1 is strongly pressed are created. The grindstone 1 is affected by the force P larger in the stage of moving from (b) to (a) than in the stage of moving from (a) to (b) by the difference in the direction of the sliding resistance at the points 5, 6. The grinding is thus performed under exertion of a press contact force F on the grindstone 1 only when said stone moves from (a) to (b) and the grindstone is returned without exertion of the force F in the backward way returning from (b) to (a), whereby the failure of the grindstone 1 is decreased. |
