An automatic sewing machine wherein blocks of unit pattern information including positon data which correspond to unit stitch patterns such as letters, symbols, etc. are stored in a memory. A first manual means selects individual unit pattern information from the stored blocks of unit pattern information in a desired order and a second manual means determines an individual size, inter-distance, and arrangement direction of the selected unit stitch patterns when they are formed on a workpiece.
