Process for producing dimethyl formamide comprises (a) reacting methanol and ammonia in the presence of a dehydrating catalyst to produce mono-, di-, and tri-methyl amine; (b) ingroducing the reaction mixt. into the first distillation tower to separate a mixt. (I) of dimethyl amine, trimethyl amine and water from an azeotrope mixt. of unreacted ammonia, mono-methyl amine and tri-methyl amine; (c) introducing (I) into the sencond distillation tower to obtain di- and tri-methyl amine mixt. (II) free of water; and (d) reacting di-methyl amine of (II) with CO and separating unreacted CO and trimethyl amine to produce dimethyl formamide.
