The process and the machine for mechanical/biological waste water treatment for compact plants, preferably in combination tanks having internal secondary settling, are characterised in that the arrangement of a conveyor unit (13) gives an overall favourable solution from the point of view of investment costs and oxygen input efficiency. Moreover, the overall concept is considerably improved in that the secondary settling tank can be designed having a flat base and the activated sludge is continuously introduced by direct routes into the intensive aeration zone. <IMAGE>
