A four wheel drive for motor vehicles is described which comprises a drive block with two main drive wheels and two auxiliary drive wheels. The auxiliary drive equipped with a higher transmission ratio than the main drive is provided on each side of the differential of the main drive, in each case by way of a prop shaft arranged in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle with preconnected freewheel mechanism by way of bevel gears to the appropriate auxiliary drive wheel. Under normal road conditions this solution ensures virtually the same transmission efficiency as a normal two-wheel drive. Only in the event of difficult drive conditions and the occurrence of slipping of the main drive wheels due to the transmission difference are the auxiliary drive wheels driven in addition. Utilisation of the adhesion of all vehicle wheels is automatically ensured under difficult road and weather conditions without additional differentials and at low cost. One exemplary embodiment is shown in the drawing.
