In a data-processing device (6), a character set with a plurality of different characters should be displayable on an output device (3), by which characters to be output are displayed assembled from character elements or by vectorial control, in connection with which a user-specific selection of the displayable characters is to be rendered possible. For this purpose, a random-access memory (11) is provided in the character generator (2) of the device (6), in which data of a character set can be stored from an external memory device (8) via a data interface (7). The data of different character sets are freely available to the operator of the device (6) on one or a number of data carriers (12) and can be selected via a keyboard (1) of the device (6) as soon as they are stored in the random-access memory (11). <IMAGE>
