PURPOSE:To reduce the mutual wear of a thin magnetic film head and a magnetic recording medium, to improve the durability of them, and to obtain superior head characteristics by using a corundum (alpha-Al2O3) single crystal as a substrate for the head, and providing favorable surface properties to the substrate. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a corundum single crystal is polished to obtain a substrate having favorable surface properties. The surface of the substrate is free from holes and a part with ununiform hardness. A thin film of ''Permalloy '', amorphous Co-Nb-Zr or amorphous Co-Ta is formed on the surface of the substrate by sputtering to manufacture a magnetic thin film head. The head reduces the mutual wear of the head and a thin metallic film such as a thin Co- Cr film as a magnetic recording medium, and the durability of them is improved. The favorable surface properties of the substrate correct the defects that the magnetic permeability of the head is reduced and that the coercive force is increased. |
