The invention relates to a process for producing a magnesium-containing supported catalyst for the polymerization and copolymerization of alpha -olefins. The magnesium is bound via oxygen to a porous metal oxide; e.g. silicon dioxide and/or aluminum oxide, and has alkoxy groups. This solid is reacted with a transition metal compound and one or more organometallic compounds of Groups I to III of the Periodic Table are added.
