PURPOSE:To obtain a fused-carbonate fuel cell having secured gas sealing by providing grooves on areas of the bipolar separators of a cell stacked body which are brought into contact with electrolyte layers, and inserting sealing members which can be unified with the electrolyte layers by heating in said grooves. CONSTITUTION:In a fused-carbonate fuel cell, grooves 15 are provided on the surfaces of the side wall members of each bipolar separator 14 which directly contact the end portions of an electrolyte layer 1 so as to form gas paths (A) and (B). Before stacking the bipolar separators 14 in such a manner that each separator 14 is placed between electrolyte layers 1 to form a stacked body, a sealing member 16 having the same composition as the electrolyte of the electrolyte layer 1 is inserted in each groove 15. After the thus formed stacked body is caulked and heated to the operation point of the cell, the sealing members 16 are fused so as to unify the members 16 with the electrolyte layers 1 and to cause the members 16 to adhere to the inner surfaces of the grooves 15. As a result, a high sealing performance is exhibited while maintaining the effective area of the electrolyte layers 1 large. |
