A rotary agitator is formed by a series of elliptical shaped discs (3) positioned in sequence along a shaft (1) carried by end plates (2) which can be connected to a drive mechanism. The discs (3) are set at an angle other than normal to the axis of the shaft (1) so that the elliptical outer edges of the sequence to discs define a cylindrical shape co-axial with the shaft axis. As the shaft (1) is rotated the discs (3) vary their attitude with respect to the ground but because the discs (3) define a cylindrical envelope the shaft (1) remains at the same height above the ground during rotation. The discs (3) can be used for a variety of purposes such as tilling the soil and sweeping operations.
