1516510 Plastisols of acrylate polymers and foams thereof TEROSON GmbH 31 Oct 1975 [15 Nov 1974 3 July 1975] 45385/75 Headings C3C C3R and C3V A plastisol comprises (a) 100 weight parts of solid particles of average size 0À1 to 500 microns of an organic polymer consisting substantially of units derived from (i) one or more of: t-butyl acrylate, a C1 to C4-alkyl methacrylate or cyclohexyl methacrylate, or (ii) one or more of the above monomers and one or more comonomers selected from C2 to C10-alkyl methacrylates, C1 to C10-alkyl acrylates, styrene and alpha-methyl styrene, said polymer having a glass transition temperature of above 35‹ C. and a degree of polymerization of more than 400, and (b) 30 to 1000 weight parts of an organic liquid component which serves as a compatible plasticizer for the organic polymer, to form a viscous dispersion having a liquid or paste-like appearance. Examples are given of plastisols comprising (a) polymethyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate/n-butyl methacrylate copolymer, a copolymer of methyl methacrylate, n-butyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid, glycidyl methacrylate, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate or vinyl imidazole, or methyl methacrylate/N-vinyl imidazole copolymer and, as plasticizer (b), tricresyl phosphate, dipropyleneglycol benzoate, dibenzyl toluene, dioctyl phthalate, tri(ethylhexyl) mellitate, butyl benzyl phthalate, dinonyl phthalate, liquid ureaformaldehyde resin, or acetyl tributyl citrate. Other ingredients of the plastisols are selected from chalk, barite, silica, titanium dioxide, zinc stearate and cross linking agents, e.g. triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate, resorcinol resins and polycarboxylic acids. The plastisols of Examples 18 and 34 comprise azo foaming agents, those of Examples 33 and 34 are used to form sealing gaskets in caps for jars and the use of the plastisols as adhesives for metals is also described. |
