The title compds. I (R=naphthyl, substituted Ph; n=1-3) were prepd. Thus, 3g 0,0-diphenylphosphonomethylglycinonoitrile and 1.0g Et3N in 50mL benzene were mixed with 2.1g trifluoroacetic acid to give 1.9g [N-(cyanomethyl)-N-(trifluoroacetyl)amino methylphosphonic acid diethyl ester. At 11.2kg/ha I [(PhO)2P(O)CH2N(SC6H4C1-p)CH2CN gave a 100% kill of Smartweed and Johnson grass. Extensive data is given for the effectiveness of the title compds. as herbicides.
