To avoid damage during road resurfacing operations, a road surface ironwork article such as a marker stud 11 or a manhole cover frame 64 is removably or height- adjustably mounted on a support such as 10 or 61 which is buried below the level to which the road may be planed. Prior to planing, the article is either removed from, or adjusted to a lower level in, its support; after resurfacing (during which the support may be protected by a sacrificial wooden plug or by a plastics sleeve) the article is replaced and adjusted to the new road height e.g. by shims 65. In a modification a manhole cover has a depending screw-threaded portion engaging a buried support.

|
