A copying lathe is provided with a templet support adapted to swing between stop positions, for roughing and finishing operations, which are controlled by the lathe carriage movements. The templet 5, Fig. 1, engaged by a feeler 4 on the tool-slide 3, is carried by brackets swinging with a rod 7. An arm 10, Fig. 2, fixed to the rod 7, carries a flat adapted to engage a fixed stop 11 controlling the finished diameter and an adjustable member 14 which engages the stop surface on the end of a lever 12. The lower end of this lever is adapted to engage an indexible cam 16, the high parts of which control the roughing cut through stop member 14, and the flats on which allow the fixed stop 11 to come into operation for finishing. The cam 16 is slidably keyed on a shaft 17, Fig. 1, and a ratchet-wheel 22 on the cam engages a pawl 23 to prevent reverse rotation. A nut 26 similarly provided with a ratchet and pawl is arranged adjacent the cam and engages by a quick-pitch thread 25 the end of the shaft 17. An adjustable stop 18 is provided on the shaft so that when the lathe carriage 2 approaches the end of the cutting stroke the shaft 17 is moved a distance equal to one-eighth of the pitch of screw 25. A spring 31 returns the shaft which rotates in the nut on this movement and thus rotates the cam 16 an eighth of a turn. Switches 34, 35 are operated by the end of the shaft to stop and reverse the lathe carriage and condition the lathe for the next movements. |
