The invention relates to a method for increasing the efficiency of or for cleaning heat exchangers for exhaust gases from internal combustion engines of stationary plants, for operating heat pumps or for coupled generation of power and heat, as well as a device for carrying out the method. Heat exchangers for exhaust gases from internal combustion engines of stationary plants, in particular from diesel motors operated with a mixture of heating oil and used oil, produce deposits, in particular of soot, in heat exchangers, so that the efficiency thereof is reduced. As a result, the overall efficiency of such a plant is reduced or, in addition, the mechanical efficiency of the internal combustion engine is worsened by back-pressure. The method according to the invention for increasing the efficiency of or for cleaning heat exchangers is characterised in that after evacuation of a liquid secondary heat transport medium or given that the circulation of a gaseous secondary heat transport medium is switched off the heat exchanger is heated up from time to time by the hot exhaust gases to a temperature adequate for cleaning the heat exchanger surfaces.
