Reciprocating piston internal combustion engine with spark ignition

The combustion chamber situated solely in the piston is formed from an oval combustion chamber recess which widens conically towards the cylinder head, lies eccentrically in relation to the piston axis and is enclosed all round by a squish area. The spark plug is offset by the distance s from the combustion chamber centre line and lies in that half of the combustion chamber which contains the outlet port. Where the combustion chamber is used for a four-cylinder in-line internal combustion engine the spark plugs of the two outer cylinders are arranged offset outwards, the spark plugs of the two inner cylinders offset inwards, in each case by the distance s in relation to the combustion chamber centre line, in order to obtain air inlet distances of equal length for all cylinders and an optimum combustion sequence.
