Counting device

A counting device is proposed which is used for counting the time between two events. The counting device comprises a clock generator which is followed by a divider. After a first event, the clock generator is connected directly to the counter so that the time between two events is measured with a high resolution. If the time exceeds a predetermined value, which is given by a certain count, a frequency divider is automatically connected between the clock generator and the counter in order to increase the measuring range. This results in a particularly wide measuring range of the counting device. <IMAGE>
