For the representation of control signs, for example "carriage return" or "new line" within a text on a display unit (AE) of a word processor, a control sign standing before a character designated by the cursor is represented by a corresponding symbol. After the actuation of a key associated with the movement of the cursor (SM), if necessary further control signs are represented successively by corresponding symbols, without movement of the cursor (SM). The symbols can be represented by the cursor (SM) changing its shape corresponding to the control sign, or by the symbols being shown, for example by mnemonic abbreviations, in an additional field (ZF) of the display unit (SE). <IMAGE>
