A method of cooling the gases obtained from the combustion of refuse in a refuse incinerator plant comprises injecting a cooling liquid directly into the incinerator to cool the gases from over 900‹ to 600‹ C. and thereafter further cooling the gases to 300‹ to 400‹ C. by adding air to the gases.
