The device comprises a source of welding heat (36, 37), two supports (6, 7) for optical fibres (15) for receiving and maintaining in alignment and in contact two end parts of optical fibres (15) to be welded end to end. These supports (6, 7) have means (12) for manually arranging the fibres (15) in contact end to end. Two clamping means (17, 18) are used to clamp the fibres (15) previously brought end to end and an electromagnet (30) is used to bring close to one another the two means for clamping (17, 18) the optical fibres (15) in order to compress axially the two parts to be welded, during the welding. Micrometric means (2) are used to adjust the approach travel of the two clamping means (17, 18). The device makes it possible to obtain good reproducibility while limiting in practice the adjustment in the starting-up period before a series of welding operations. <IMAGE>
