For cleaning a moving cooling surface, which can for example be the surface of a cooling drum (3), the lower edge of a cleaning device (10) is arranged at a small spacing (d) from the cooling drum (3). A carrier gas is contained in the frame (18) of the cooling apparatus (10), and is under a low pressure. The carrier gas is situated in a discharge space (25). The discharge is excited by a frame-shaped anode (12) which is connected to the positive pole of a direct current source (11), so that a potential difference exists between the cooling drum (3) and the anode (12). The discharge effects a removal of material and hence a cleaning of the surface of the cooling drum (3), which moves in the direction of the arrow (6). The small spacing (d), which is smaller than the so-called cathode dark space, on the one hand prevents a discharge between the cooling drum (3) and the pole shoes (14) facing the cooling drum, and on the other hand ensures a low leakage rate of the gas situated in the discharge space. The ionised material particles appearing in the discharge space (25) pass through the bores (24) into a flushing chamber (19) and are sucked out there through a connection duct (21). A contamination of the space containing the cooling drum (3) is thereby prevented.
