New basic azo compounds of the formula <IMAGE> where A<(-)> is an anion, can be prepared by quaternising a compound of the formula <IMAGE> with a compound of the formula CH3-A III where A is a radical that is convertible into an anion A<(-)>. They are used for dyeing, pad-dyeing or printing textiles made of polyacrylonitrile, acid-modified polyamide or polyester and also for dyeing or printing leather and paper in good fastness properties.
