The invention relates to a feeder for continuously feeding separated quires of sheets to a bookbinding machine for further processing. On the basis of the object, to produce a quire feeder with reliable separation of the quires and a large pile holding capacity, an assembly line feeder, upstream of which a bar feeder can be arranged, is provided with additional devices. The quires of sheets with the closed end pointing forwards are transported as an imbricated chain on the assembly line feeder to the separating section. Before leaving the assembly line feeder, the loose line of quires is stabilised somewhat using loading rollers and advanced through an adjustable damping device to a sheet stop in such a way that one quire of sheets constantly rests against the sheet stop connected to a switch, while the preceding quire of sheets is drawn off by means of a suction device. A blowing air device provided in the separating region feeds the blowing nozzles arranged behind the sheet, symmetrically in relation to the quire of sheets and below the supporting plate, to facilitate separation using blowing air. The drive of the assembly line feeder is controlled by the switch actuated by the sheet stop.
