A catalyst suitable for use in the polymerization of olefins is disclosed. This catalyst contains: [A] a solid catalyst component obtained by calcining a reaction product of (a) at least one compound selected from an amine compound, a phosphoric acid amide, a hydrocarbyloxy compound of titanium, vanadium, hafnium or zirconium, and a germanium compound having the general formula: R1R2R3R4Ge wherein (i) R1, R2 and R3 are each independently a hydrocarbon group having 1 through 10 carbon atoms, and R4 is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a -OH group, or a -OGeR1R2R3 group, or (ii) R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each independently -OR5 wherein R5 is a hydrocarbon group having 1 through 10 carbon atoms, or a halogen atom, and a tin compound having the general formula: R1R2R3R6Sn wherein R1, R2 and R3 are the same as defined above and R6 is a halogen atom, or -OH group, with (b) at least one chromium compound, said reaction product being supported on an inorganic oxide carrier; and [B] an organometallic compound component.
