PURPOSE:To improve workability and ease of maintenance with a simplified mechanism of a vertical rolling mill and to reduce considerably the costs for equipment and construction of a building foundation by pushing forcibly a material to be rolled into the space between vertical rolls of a non-driving system and subjecting the material to cross rolling. CONSTITUTION:A slab 9 is pushed forcibly into the space between vertical rolls 1 and 1 by horizontal driving rolls 5, 5. The slab 9 is drawn from the rolls 1, 1 by horizontal driving rolls 6, 6 when the forward end of the slab 9 is bitten into the space between the rolls 6 and 6. Thus, the slab 9 is cross rolled by the insertion with the rolls 5, 5 and drawing with the rolls 6, 6. The rolls 5, 5, 6, 6 are rotated respectively reverse upon ending of the cross rolling of the slab 9 to a prescribed width, that is, the cross rolling of the slab 9 is performed further by operating the rolls 5, 5 as drawing rolls and the rolls 6, 6 as inserting rolls. |
