A winch for use on ships has a single drum 12 that is completely closed at the top and is mounted on a base housing 14 in bearings 16, such that the drum can turn about a vertical axis in relation to the housing. The drum 12 is driven in a given direction by drawing in a rope 28, which is wound around an automatically recoiling pulley 19 in the base housing 14, in order thereby to turn the pulley 19 and a ratchet or coupling element 26 linked thereto, and gear wheel 22 that drives an annular wheel 17 on the drum 12. A brake coupling 21 is operatively connected to the winch 12 and the base housing 14 in order to prevent rotation of the drum 12 in a direction counter to the given direction and to transmit a torque load applied to the drum 12 to a gear plate 43 in order to automatically adjust the gear ratio. An infinitely variable hydraulic drive element is also described. <IMAGE>
