PURPOSE:To enable multicolor display by combining a display electrode having the display color different from the coloring intrinsic to an electrochromic (EC) material and a display electrode displaying the coloring intrinsic to the EC material by making use of the light interference color of the EC material layer. CONSTITUTION:A light reflective metallic electrode 10 is provided on a substrate 1 and a tungsten oxide film is provided at 3,000Angstrom thickness to form the 1st display electrode 13. A transparent electrode 12 is provided on a transparent substrate 11 and a tungsten oxide film (3,000Angstrom ) is vapor deposited thereon to form the 2nd display electrode 17. An electrolyte 15 is packed between the substrates, thereby forming an EC display cell. When a voltage is impressed between a counter electrode 16 and the 1st display electrode 13, a green color is displayed and when the voltage is impressed between said electrode and the 2nd display electrode 17, a blue color is displayed. The multicolor display in blue B, green G and bluish green B.G is made possible only by the EC material of tungsten oxide according to the way of superposing the pattern of the EC layer. |
