The invention aims to increase the efficiency of infrared emission and to minimise the power consumed with a view to transmitting digital signals at high throughput across an infrared link. In the transmitter, each initial n bit word is converted in a coder 4 into a coded word having n + 1 bits, the first bit of which is in a predetermined state and the n other bits of which are the inverses of those of the initial word when the number of bits at "1" in the initial word is greater than or equal to a number m, or the first bit of which is in the state inverse to the predetermined state and the n other bits of which are respectively those of the initial word when the number of bits at "1" in the initial word is less than m. m is equal to n/2 + 1 if n is even or to n/2 + 0.5 is n is odd. A coder in the receiver decodes each coded word with n + 1 bits into the initial n bit word. <IMAGE>
