The generator for a vehicle lighting system has a rotor between two pole pieces with interfitting claws which enclose a ring magnet between them. One end of the rotor spindle carries a pulley outside the casing, and the other end is supported by bearing inside the casing. The bearing is housed inside a fixed flange sleeve with another bearing on the outside for a control ring. This is of soft magnetic or ferromagnetic material with a flange which can be brought into contact with the rotor by an inwardly sliding movement so as to magnetically short circuit the rotor. This enables the excitation to be varied so as to regulate the output of the generator. The sliding movement is controlled by a rotating actuator inside the flanged sleeve, connected to an auxiliary motor mounted on the outside of the casing.
