The invention relates to a method, and to a circuit arrangement for carrying it out, for controlling the output signal of a semiconductor laser, and is characterised in that the peak value of the modulation current has a pilot tone superimposed on it, in that the pilot tone frequency is filtered out of the electrical output signal of an opto-electronic converter which receives and converts the optical output signal of the semiconductor laser, in that the pilot tone received in this way is compared with a reference signal and the comparison result is supplied to the modulation current as the control signal. This method allows good stabilisation of the peak current operating points of the semiconductor laser, the cost for fast components being very low. The superimposition of the second pilot tone is proposed in order to set the base operating point of the semiconductor laser diode.
