PURPOSE:To determine the quality of vitreous blast furnace slag with a simple and quick operation by classifying the sample of said slag then immersing the slag in heated aqueous alkali and determining quantitatively the amt. of the aluminum eluted from the sample. CONSTITUTION:The sample of vitreous blast furnace slag is classified to prescribed grain sizes. The effect of elution is higher as the classified grain size of the sample is smaller, but if it is too small, handling in the operation for sample prepn. and filtration is laborious and therefore the sample is preferably classified to the same grain size usaully within a 0.1-0.5mm. range. Aqueous alkali is put in a vessel and is heated. The classified sample slag is put therein at the point of the time when the water attains a prescribed temp. and the elutable component in the slag is eluted. The boiling alkali is preferred in this case in order to expedit the elution. The amt. of the aluminum eluted from the sample is quantitatively determined. The water hardenability of the sample slag is determined from the amt. of the eluted aluminum obtd. in such a way. Such determination s accomplished simply by measuring the amt. of the eluted aluminum and is therefore made qucikly with good workability. |
