In an apparatus for coating lengths of material (1) moving over a support roller (2) and having controllable application thicknesses, the coating medium is applied to the length of material by means of a slot nozzle (21) which extends over the width of the length of material (1) and has a width-adjustable premetering gap (23) to which a metering lip and a return-flow lip (24) are connected such that a metering chamber (25) is formed which extends over the width of the length of material. In order to make possible a sensitive change of the application weight by simple means with the highest coating quality, the metering lip is designed with a doctor bar (6) which is guided on at least one flat slide surface (4), on the outflow side, of the doctor bed (3) forming the metering lip, the end face (7) of the doctor bar (6) forms, with the length of material, a narrowing wedge-shaped gap, the geometry of which is independent of the pressing pressure, the outflow edge of the end face (7) forms a rectilinear, sharp-edged limiting edge (8), the doctor bar (6) is flexurally soft in the region of the end face (7) and limiting edge (8), the end face (7) has high wear resistance, and a pressing pressure of the doctor bar (6) against the length of material (1) is applied by an elastic pressing means (9) between the doctor bar and the doctor bed. <IMAGE>
