In order to obtain a high-voltage tap changer with small dimensions, which corresponds to the electrical and mechanical requirements in all respects, can be produced economically and can be matched to different switching tasks, in the manner of a module, by using components which are as identical as possible, a plurality of switching chambers (1) which consist of insulating material and are inherently identical or at least approximately identical, are arranged in a row on the end sides. All the switching chambers (1) contain cavities (3) which are mutually coaxial and are connected to one another. The switching chambers (1) located on the outside are sealed on the end sides by closing covers (6). All the switching chambers (1) contain identical fixed-position and moving switching contacts (10, 14) which are inserted into the respective cavity (3) passing through the switching chambers (1) in a sealed manner. The moving switching contacts can be moved into the open or closed position via insulating rods which can be operated from the outside. The switching chambers (1) and the closing covers (6) are connected by means of bolts (5) having detachable closures (60) in a sealed manner to form an integral block (Fig. 4). <IMAGE>
