Automatic or semi-automatic electric resistance continuous mash seam welding of can bodies comprised of sheet-metal parts which are overlapped and rolled into can bodies (20), with a guiding device arranged upstream of the welding station to determine the overlapping width of the can body edges (21, 22) and provided with spring guiding elements (32 to 34) which provide for the clamping of the can body edges (21, 22) in the path direction towards the welding station against the bottom of grooves (29, 30) of a Z-shaped rail (13), and a calibrating ring (40) arranged in the welding station area; the configuration of the guiding device is such that the width covering the can body edges (21, 22) at the welding station is at the maximum equal to six times the thickness of the can wall; wire electrodes (11) may be drawn by a roller, conducted to electrode rollers (7, 9) and formed as flat wire electrodes (11) with a width located at the welding station above the overlapping width of the can body edges (21, 22). Thereby, the Z-shaped rail (13) and the mounting of roller electrodes (7, 9) are simplified. To this effect, the groove bottoms (29, 30) of the Z-shaped rail (13) extend in parallel and the axis of the roller electrodes (7, 9) are in the plane perpendicular to the welding direction. |
