Polymers useful as ion exchange membranes are produced from free radical initiated copolymerization of at least 3 monomers. They are respectively chosen from tetrafluoroethylene; trifluoromonochloroethylene; trifluoroethylene; vinyliden fluoride; 1,1-difluoro-2,2-dichloroethylene; 1,1-difluoro-2-chloroethylene; hexafluoropropylene; 1,1,1,3,3,-pentafluoropropylene; octafluoro-isobutylene ethylene; vinyl chloride; trifluoronitrosoethane; and alkyl vinyl ether; They are also chosen from compds. of formula (IV) and compds. of formula(V). Y is an acid gp.; X is C1 or Br; a, a', b, b', n, and n' are integers >=0; C, and c' are O or 1; a+b+c and a'+b'+c' are not zero. Rf and Rf, are F, C1, perfluoroalkyl or fluorochloroalkyl.
